Somalia Medical Research Institute (SOMRI) is research core productive team established 2012, as a national body endorsed by Ministry of Health and Interior, responsible for carrying out health research in Somalia. Since its inception, SOMRI has developed a critical mass of scientists and technical personnel, to enable it mount a competitive research infrastructure to rank as a leading centre of excellence in health research both in Africa as well as Somalia.

Mandates
- To carry out research in human health.
- To cooperate with other research organizations and institutions of higher learning on matters of relevant research and training.
- To work with other research bodies within and outside Somalia carrying out similar research.
- To cooperate with the Ministry of Health, the Ministry and other ligned ministries for health and research.
- Research Committee in matters pertaining to research policies and priorities.
- To do all things as appear to be necessary, describe or expedient to carry out its functions.
- To carry out research to highest international scientific and ethical standards on major causes of morbidity and mortality in Africa.
- To build strong and sustainable internationally competitive, national and regional research capacity.
- To work in a way that facilitates integration and cross fertilization of scientific disciplines.
- To conduct intervention research and basic research in parallel.
- To have a direct input to local and international health policy
